Study Reveals Andaman Islands’ 65,000 Ton Tuna Production Potential India, October 1, 13

Pondicherry Central University attendee, Dr. M. Suresh has achieved a Ph.D. Management degree for research on the topic of “Export Potential of Marine Products and Its Impact on Eradication of Poverty in Andaman Islands (A Study with Special Reference to Tuna Fish Variety).” The research revealed the domestic production potential of the Indian territory Islands.



The research particularly focused on the potential contribution of foreign exchange earnings and increased employment that could come from Andaman tuna exports. The study found that the Andaman Sea has the potential for 65,000 ton production, which is available to be exploited.

The Andaman Islands is part of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands Union territory of India. The Andaman Sea has in the past been subject to illegal fishing practices, meaning a lot of its tuna resources are landed in foreign grounds. Research showed that with formal organization of fishermen in the region, as many as 30,000 jobs could be created for the local community.
