GenSan Sizzles With Tuna Fiesta & Congress Philippines, August 30, 13

General Santos City will mark its 45th charter anniversary with its 15th Tuna Festival. Themed as a carnival, the day will host a Tuna Float Parade which will put a spotlight on the city’s vibrant tuna industry.

The five day celebrations, starting September 5, will feature a variety of events including tuna-related culinary activities and sports tournaments.

The country’s leading tuna players will meet together at the 15th National Tuna Congress and Trade Exhibition from the 6-7 September to discuss the prospects of the industry. As well as being a global tuna hub, the city feels it has developed an ecotourism potential.

The Congress will be headed by the Socsksargen Federation of Fisheries and Allied Industries (SFFAII) which is one of the country’s biggest fisheries associations. Resolutions will be made to focus on making the tuna industry more resilient and sustainable.

Celebrations will come to an end on September 9, with a street dance competition, where dancers will perform in fisheries-themed carnival costumes to represent the bounty of each ocean.

The tuna industry in the region employs more than 5,000 workers and contributes substantially to the local economy.
