Colombia Holds 9 Ecuadorian Vessels On IUU Fishing

Colombia has arrested nine Ecuadorian vessels for fishing illegally in its Pacific waters, where about 70,000 tons of tuna are caught illegally each year.
According to the local coast guard, it’s common to find vessels fishing illegally in Colombian waters, and especially in the marine reserves near the islands of Malpelo and Gorgona. So far this year, the coast guard has caught 12 boats, with two Colombians and 21 Ecuadorians on board.
One official says it’s hard to prosecute the crews because they cannot be detained for more than 36 hours, and sometimes the Malpelo authorities do not examine the cases in time.
At the time of the most recent arrest, the nine Ecuadorian vessels had caught about six tons of fish.
