Chemical Properties Of Tuna: The Future Of Medicine?

Nine European research institutions and Anfaco, the group that represents Spanish tuna canners, have studied the potential use of chemical compounds in marine species to treat various diseases, including mental diseases and cancer.
The “Pharmatlantic” project team is holding a final symposium today in Spain that will discuss the chemical, bioactive properties of marine species, from nutrients to powerful toxins, and their possible medical applications.
Thirteen researchers and experts are presenting their findings and the event is expected to attract about 150 industry professionals who are interested in exploiting marine resources.
The three-year project intends to pass on its research to drug companies. It was funded by the EU and had a budget that exceeded EUR 2 million.


Participating institutions included Anfaco, University of Santiago de Compostela, Interdisciplinary Centre of Marine and Environmental Research at the University of Porto (CIIMAR), Queen’s University Belfast, France’s National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS), Cork Institute of Technology, University of the Algarve, Dublin City University, Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute, and the University of Aberdeen.
