30 New Mexican Seiners To Be Built In The Next Five Years?

Antonio Suarez, Grupomar

The renewal of the Mexican tuna fleet is “just around the corner,” according to Antonio Suarez, chairman of Grupomar, who anticipates major contracts for about 30 new purse seiners in the next five years.

Suarez told local media that the new orders will mean significant opportunities for Mexican shipbuilders and the Spanish constructor, Armon.
Currently, nine of the 10 tuna vessels contracted in recent months for the entire global fleet are being made in Asturias at Armon’s Gijon wharf. Last month, the company reported it was not prepared for the sudden and unexpected demand from the tuna industry and had to increase its workforce for the projects as a result.
Two of the orders are from a Basque company, while the other seven are from two companies in Mexico, one being Grupomar. Once complete, the vessels will measure 78 m and hold 1,500 GRT.
