A pre-trial conference was conducted Friday and a trial date fixed for January 28, on the case of prominent Honiara resident Lawrence Makili. Makili is the Earth Island Institute’s director for the Pacific Islands Nations, according to his LinkedIn profile.

Makili was accused of assaulting his partner on the evening of June 8, last year whilst on their way home in their vehicle following an argument. It was further alleged he choked partner while squeezing her neck.

He faces one count of assault causing actual bodily harm.

His lawyer during the conference said his client denied the allegation and said it was all fabricated. He said the injuries sustained by the woman were results of her own action.

At one point during their argument, Makili said the alleged victim threatened to get out of the moving vehicle and had to hold on to her whilst he was driving.

The prosecution has only the woman to call and her statement and medical report and photographs to present to the court.

The defense however has three witnesses, including the accused. Two of the defense witnesses are in the province while only one is residing in Honiara. When asked when the two witnesses will be available in Honiara, Makili said it depends on the shipping service.

Principal Magistrate Jim Seuika set the trial date for January 28. He said trial will proceed on January 28 and if in the event the prosecution has a strong case then the defense will have to call its two witnesses.

The prosecution was asked to make sure the alleged victim is present in court and have the medical report available with them as well.
