Rising Fur Seal Numbers A Problem For Tuna Farms

MP Peter Treloar says fur seals are causing severe problems off Eyre Peninsula in South Australia.
He says there is damage affecting tuna farming and crayfishing operations.
Scientists say the fur seal population has nearly doubled in the past five years.
While he is not proposing a cull, Mr. Treloar says the South Australian Government needs a coordinated action plan to deal with seal numbers.
“They’re moving into territory where we’ve not seen them before,” he said.
“It’s been reported that there’s a decline in numbers of fairy penguins. There's even been speculation that they may be the cause in the decline of cuttlefish populations, now we don’t know that for sure but what we do know is that the number of fur seals is increasing.”
