ICCAT Looks For By-Catch Coordinator

Following a request from its Scientific Committee, the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT), is seeking a by-catch coordinator for a short term contract (no longer than six months).

According to the Commission: “The workload of the ICCAT Standing Committee on Research and Statistics (SCRS) has increased considerably in recent years due to a need to improve the collection, compilation and analysis of data on non-target (by-catch) species caught during tuna fishing operations. This effort is necessary to quantify total by-catch, its composition and disposition, as well as to assess the impacts of fishing on the by-catch populations”.

Proposals should be sent by contractors until September 10th 2009. Some of the minimum requirements are:

  • Graduate degree in Fisheries or a closely related field.
  • Good knowledge of the management and standardization of databases.
  • Demonstrated capacity to conceptualize and quantify scientific problems associated with by-catch
  • Knowledge of the principal fisheries for tuna and tuna-like species within the ICCAT Convention area.
