Maldives Tuna Fisheries Seeking Membership Of IOTC

Necessary preparations are underway to gain full membership of Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC) as approved by Fisheries Advisory Board, Permanent Secretary of the Fisheries Ministry Dr. Abdulla Naseer has said.

Dr. Naseer said different types of membership can be chosen. In this regard, he said, corporative membership does not require membership fees to be given while a full membership does require payment of membership fees.

Fisheries minister Dr. Ibrahim Didi at the inaugural ceremony of the Regional Workshop on Tagging Tuna Fish held at Addu Atoll from 4-5 of this month has said that fishing at a regional level cannot be developed and maintained by individual countries. Most of the participants at the workshop are organizations involved in fish tagging in the Indian Ocean.
Fishermen recently attempted to send a petition to the parliament stating that the government during the past failed to protect the territorial fishing grounds from foreign poachers.
