Illegal Tuna Fishing In Indonesia On The Rise – No Monitoring

Illegal fishing of tuna fish by foreign fishermen are on the rise in Enggano Island in Bengkulu. The fishermen normally come from Thailand, the Philippines, Korea and Japan. “There are many tuna fish in Enggano because that is part of their migration route,” M. Rafli Zen, Enggano Traiditonal chief last week.

Bengkulu Naval Base commander, Lt. Col Sukrisno, admitted it was not easy to monitor the waters around Enggano Island. There are no special docks for patrol boats and it is difficult to obtain fuel as there are no gas stations available in the area. “The lack of facilities at the Enggano post do not support effective monitoring,” Sukrisno said.
