Data Confirms 2009 Catches In EPO Are Falling

The Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC) catching data of the major tuna species for the first month of 2009 confirms lower catches in the Eastern Pacific Ocean (EPO).
The total amount caught during January was 39.187 M/T, 31% less than the same period last year, which had 56.295 M/T as a total.

Skipjack catches were down around 15.000 M/T this year. The lower catches in January have resulted in prices firming up for both skipjack and yellowfin.

Ecuador was the major country targeting skipjack and bigeye. Mexico, traditionally, concentrated its efforts almost solely on yellowfin tuna.
