2 Tuna Fishing Vessels Destroyed By Fire – Possibly Torched

A 75 foot fiber fishing vessel docked in Hdh. Makunudhoo for repair and maintenance has been destroyed in a fire that broke out on Saturday night.

According to Makunudhoo Councilor Abdulla Hameed the vessel owned by Ensis Fishing Pvt. Ltd and was used for yellowfin tuna fishing in Male’.

He said he knew of the incident when someone called him and informed him about the incident and when he went to the site some 30 people were trying to extinguish the fire. Police officers in Kaditheemu and Kulhudhuhfushi reached the island after midnight and by that time the fire was extinguished by the islanders.

He said there are signs to indicate that vessel was torched and that incident is being investigated by the police. No arrests have been made at this point in time, according to Councilor Abdulla Hameed. 

In a separate incident a fishing dhoni named Tharahgee anchored in Gulhi falhu of Kaafu atoll also caught fire and was burnt down completely on Saturday morning.

The accident occurred at 0600 hours in the morning on Saturday and at the time of the incident there were two expatriates and one local in the dhoni, according to Maldives Police Services.

The fire was extinguished by Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) and the police. However, the the fire had destroyed a large of the dhoni. Investigations conducted so far have indicated that the fire first appeared in the engine room. The incident is being further investigated by the General Investigation Unit of the Maldives Police Service. There are no reports of any casualties in both the incidents.
